2017–2018 / UX designer
Stockholms universitet is one of Europes leading institutions for higher education, with just over 29,300 full-time students and 1,400 doctoral students active.
The goal.
Stockholm University’s website was a maze for its users—students, prospective students, and university staff—each with different needs but facing the same struggle: finding what they were looking for. The site’s complexity and fragmented structure made navigation frustrating and unclear.
Our mission as UX designers was to untangle this complexity and lay the foundation for a new, more intuitive digital experience.
My experience.
We began with what matters most—understanding the users. Through extensive usability testing and in-depth interviews with all major target groups, we uncovered valuable insights into their behaviors, pain points, and needs. These insights were structured through target group analysis, including behavioral segmentation, prioritization, user archetypes, and persona modeling.
To go even deeper, we developed realistic user scenarios, mapped user journeys, and conducted external benchmarking. Along the way, we facilitated multiple workshops with stakeholders to ensure alignment and gather input from all corners of the organization.
Throughout the process, we validated our concepts with iterative usability testing using interactive wireframe prototypes, ensuring that we were always moving in the right direction.
Outcome & reflection.
The result of this comprehensive research and testing process was a solid UX foundation: a clearly defined concept and wireframes that were handed over to the university’s designers and developers.
This project reminded me of the power of listening, analyzing, and iterating. Designing for clarity in a complex system isn’t just about simplifying—it’s about empathizing. With the right process and insights, even the most overwhelming digital environments can be transformed into experiences that feel natural and empowering.
